VCF Celebrates 2009 Accomplishments With Donors
At its 6th annual meeting, the Valley Community Foundation announced several new funds that will support charitable organizations serving the Lower Naugatuck Valley in perpetuity. Many of the funds were created in memory of loved ones who have passed away, while others honor family members who are still living. Among those given special recognition: the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Ansonia Fund to support broad charitable purpose, with a preference for charitable activities that advance the ancient Hellenic ideals of compassion, charity, love and philanthropy toward humanity; the Mary A. Schmecker ‘Turtle Shell’ Fund to help those who are interested in learning how to make a career in the arts; the Colonel Lloyd E. & Joan Platt Witmer to support several organizations including the Valley Boys & Girls Club; and the Jones Family Farms Fund to support groups, organizations, and causes important to Shelton's well-known family.
President James Cohen remarked that more than $670,000 was distributed to charitable organizations serving citizens of the Lower Naugatuck Valley, including over $130,000 in grants to 30 nonprofits through a competitive grants process.
