Coach Bobby Kelo Memorial Scholarship
Est. 2021 as a scholarship fund by Jacqueline Kelo in memory of her son, Bob, to benefit graduating Seymour High School students.
Robert (Bobby) Edward Kelo, Jr., was fondly known by his community and friends as Coach Kelo.
Before his death in 2020, Bobby had a 32-year career as a math teacher & coach at Seymour High School in Seymour, CT. As head baseball coach, Coach Kelo compiled an impressive record of 438-239 including six league championships, twenty-three playoff appearances, eleven semi-final appearances, six finals and the State championship in 2007.
He was twice named New Haven Register Coach of the Year, and once named Connecticut Post Coach of the Year. Sixty of his players went on to play baseball in college. Forty-five of his players were selected to All-League teams. Twenty-five of his players were selected for the all-state team and six players signed Major League baseball contracts.
Coach Kelo was inducted into the Seymour High Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
Bobby graduated from Seymour High in 1978 and received a bachelor’s degree in Math from Southern Connecticut State University in 1983.
As a teacher and Coach, Bobby was tough and determined, but also had a heart of gold. He had a lasting impact on his students and players and was a loyal friend, son and brother. Former players state that “Coach Bob Kelo was not only my coach, not only a friend, but a part of the family.”
In 2021, Bobby's mother, Jacqueline Kelo, established the Coach Bobby Kelo Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Valley Community Foundation in memory of her son to benefit graduating Seymour High School students.
When she passed in November 2021, Mrs. Kelo invited friends and family to make a gift to the Fund in lieu of flowers. Read about her life here.
