Remembering William C. “Bill” Bassett

The Valley Community Foundation (VCF) mourns the loss of William C. “Bill” Bassett, a founding member of our Board of Directors and a guiding force in establishing VCF in 2004. Bill’s vision, warmth, and unwavering belief in the power of local philanthropy helped lay the foundation for all that VCF has accomplished in the past two decades.
Bill and his late wife, Judy, embodied a deep commitment to community that has defined the Bassett family for generations. In 2005 they created the Bassett Family Fund, ensuring ongoing support for Valley nonprofits. Their generosity -- and the family’s New England roots reaching back to 1642 -- reflect a legacy of caring for neighbors and strengthening the place they proudly called home.
The Bassett family’s story is woven into a history of innovation and generosity in the Valley. From William E. Bassett’s creation of the iconic TRIM nail clipper in 1947 to Bill’s leadership of The W.E. Bassett Company beginning in 1981, the family built more than a thriving business. They cultivated a culture of giving that continues today, with the Bassett Family Fund having granted more than $2.5 million to local programs and nonprofits.
VCF is forever grateful for Bill’s leadership, kindness, and dedication to our Valley and the people that make it a special place. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the entire Bassett family.
( The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Valley Foundation Fund established in 1980 by his late uncle, Harry Bassett.)
